Snowflake Challenge: Day 1

 Well, I'm getting started on this late because I just decided to do it since a number of people in my circle are doing it. So, here I am with day 1.

What's my happy place? Right now, it's my living room. I have a beautiful Christmas tree with all the trimmings that I really have been fighting with my husband to let me keep up. And we have icicle lights in the dining room and regular lights framing our doors, and it's just very peaceful and beautiful and makes me feel at home. I'm all cozy up under a blanket and it's nice to read or write in here. I will miss it when the decorations come down.

I will miss it when the decorations come down.

I was just looking around last evening and had the same thought.

All of the light and sparkly is especially welcome when you're talking about the depths of dark in an Alaskan winter. Last year, we left the one artificial evergreen swag with white fairy lights wound through it up in the big livingroom window until March, which is about when the returning daylight begins to outweigh the dark. We've got it set on a cheap timer, so it's on in the morning when I go up to deal with Dire Cat Starvation (aka breakfast) and it comes back on midafternoon when it gets dark again. It's so cheery and happy-making that it's well worth the small amount of extra electricity it adds to our bill.

Honestly I wish Christmas lasted for another month. Once the holidays are over, we have to survive through January and February with no further beauty or light or community-gathering impetus and it's just. Grueling.

I leave decorations up at my house for as long as I can get away with, too.

Yeah. There's Valentine's Day I suppose, but that's such a gross commercial holiday. I wish the holidays lasted longer into January.
