So, I've always wanted to get a phoenix tattoo on my back. Well, maybe not always. But since I was 14 or so. I wanted a phoenix rising from the ashes to symbolize my triumph over my depression. But, I want almost a full back piece and that's like a 25 hour tattoo, and I thought it was probably a bad idea to start that big. And I've never had anything smaller that I wanted and I didn't want to get a tattoo just to have a tattoo. But... that has changed in the last couple of weeks.

I've been thinking about it, and I think that Sherlock fandom has meant enough to me that I want something on my body to commemorate it. And I've decided that I want a bee and a honeycomb on my sternum. I have ideas of eventually expanding the piece and adding more honeycomb and bees and flowers and maybe some geometric type linework under my breasts. But for the start I just want a single bee and some honeycomb between my boobs until I know how well I sit. And I'm nervous, because I've heard that the sternum is a very painful spot to get tattooed because you're basically on top of the bone. And of course the underboob area is on top of the ribs, also very painful. But, I figure if I can get this piece, it will give me an idea of whether or not I can sit for a back piece.

I've decided on an artist. Owen Lostetter. Local guy, I like his Instagram. He's done some nice insects and some nice sternum pieces and the studio he works for (Lost Cowboy in Santa Fe) has very good reviews on Yelp and Google. I'm going to try to meet with him next week to discuss my idea and get booked. One of the things I want to discuss with him is whether to go black and grey or to do partially black and grey with pops of color. I suppose I could always go black and grey first and add color later if I decide I want color. Husband's vote is for color. I definitely want my phoenix on my back to be colored, and I guess I'm okay with having a combination of some black and grey and some color tattoos on my body.

Anyway, I'm super excited about this. I love body modification, but so far all my mods have been piercings (and I have stretched ears, 2g). My pain tolerance for piercings has been okay but that's a very different kind of pain. I still feel like if I can handle having my nipples pierced I can get a sternum tattoo though. People think that a piercing just hurts when the needle goes through and after that it's over, but the nipples hurt worse the following day than they did the day I had them done and were still bleeding and sore for a week after. They took 18 moths to completely heal and one of them got the dreaded "piercing bump"  (local, pimple like infection) which was very painful and a bitch to clear up. A couple hours of pain followed by a week of healing time sounds much easier to be honest. I just need to remind myself that pain is temporary and I can do this.

If you're inked, especially if you have tattoos on your ribs/sternum, please let me know your experiences!
